Trying to focus on values.  Over complicated the shapes with the grey that should have been his shoulders/hoodie.  Not clear that he's biting his hoodie.  Fun practice the the crayon though.

2018 arting goals

Goals for 2018 are to focus on value, process and composition.  We'll pay attention how much time I need to get a blocking in.  Can be anywhere from 5-20 mins.  A goal floating in the back of my head is to get a solid showing of where I'll be going with the image in 20 mins or so.  Long term goal to have said 20 mins be a frameable stand-alone image if executed with proper materials.  I should stick with one size, one paper, and one drawing medium if I aim to practice as effectively for mastery as I can.  We'll see what happens. Christmas Break pt. 2

Last drawing of the new Christmas break.  Trying to focus on value, process an composition.  Tried to follow a process of light lay in and focusing on the most important statements first. Drawn from New Master's Academy reference, conte crayon and cheap, cheap newsprint.

Christmas break pt. 1

Christmas vacation.  Finally had some time together with my wife, so I was not drawing all day long.  When I was drawing, I'm not sure what I'm working on, or towards, so I was once again floundering again a little.  Was trying drawing larger again, with conte crayon, a medium I not used to.  Starting to think about what I want to focus on for the next year.  All drawn from photos from the "line-of-action," drawing resource website.

Christmas composition

Some updated composition experiments attempts on the field day picture.  Previous thumbnails on this link.   Lluis would like to see some sort of story being told.  Good idea.  I will think about it.  Would like to keep working on this in different styles, mediums and mediums once we get the composition/story nailed down.

Return to Spring Studio

Back to Spring Studio for a day of drawing.  Was tired and burnt out, but that's no excuse so we got an early morning train to NYC.  The shorter gesture poses felt the best.  I'm trying to gesture the same size on newsprint as I'll draw on better paper.  Started falling apart on longer poses.  Thinking was hard and got overwhelmed by details.  The portrait session was a disaster as I was floundering.  BUT, I got a GREAT lesson from the monitor Lyle Gertz.  Called me out on floundering and set be back on track.  Goals for the new year are values, composition and getting out of my own way.  Once again,  a great group of people there to draw.  And the day before Christmas no less.

This photo caught my eye.  Found her face and expression very interesting.  Decided to explore it.  Did some prep sketches, tried a longer "final," and lost some of the caricature.  Went back the next month for a 2nd try.
